東日本大震災から早くも1年が経過しました。被害が大きかった地域ではがれきの撤去が進み、被災者の皆さんは力強く立ち上がりつつありますが、本格的な生活の再建、復興には、まだまだ長い時間がかかります。

１９２３年９月。かつて東京も大きな震災に見舞われました。関東大震災です。東京はこの震災から立ち直り、その後、戦災などの困難を経て世界でももっとも安全な都市の一つになりました。

新聞社や放送局にニュースを配信する通信社は、記事だけではなく関東大震災以降多くの写真を撮影、提供してきました。日本を代表する通信社の一つである共同通信社は、日本電報通信社（現在の株式会社電通の前身）や同盟通信など、戦前、戦中の通信社が撮影した大正、昭和初期の報道写真を多数所蔵しています。

今回の写真展では、共同通信社の写真アーカイブの中から、１９２３年の震災当時の様子、その後の復興過程、そして現在の東京の写真を比較・展示し、復興は必ず成し遂げられるというメッセージを皆様にお伝えしたいと思います。

インターネット時代にあってマスメディアのあり方が問われています。通信社も社会の要請にあわせて自己改革をしなくてはなりませんが、関東大震災以降９０年近くにわたって継続的に取材を続けている「定点観測者としての通信社」の活動について、本写真展通じてご紹介いたします。

One year has passed since the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. Debris in northeastern Japan areas hardest hit by the disasters is being cleared and residents there are gradually standing on their own feet. But it will take time before Japan witnesses full-scale reconstruction and restoration in the areas.

In September 1923, Tokyo was devastated by a big earthquake which came to be known as the Great Kanto Earthquake. Tokyo recovered from that disaster and, after overcoming additional difficulties such as World War II, emerged as one of the safest cities in the world.

This photo exhibition features photos of Tokyo from Kyodo News, Japan’s leading news agency, which is fully cooperating in this endeavor and has a huge collection of photos of the Great Kanto Earthquake and subsequent reconstruction efforts since the Taisho and early Showa eras. The photos were taken by Japan Telegraphic Communication Co. (the precursor to Dentsu Inc.) and Domei News Agency (the predecessor to Kyodo News). The exhibition, comparing them with photos of modern-day Tokyo, is aimed to convey a message of encouragement to victims of the March disasters and other people at home and abroad who stand by their side.

Mass media is under growing scrutiny in this era of the Internet. News agencies face the challenge of changing themselves. We earnestly hope that this photo exhibition will help you better understand the activities of “a news agency as an on-the-spot observer” since the Great Kanto Earthquake.
